Прилагательное похожий может передаваться английскими like и alike. Оба прилагательных употребляются предикативно (like в атрибутивной функции соответствует русскому подобный: this and the like subjects). Like означает 'похожий на кого-л. или что-л.' и часто имеет в виду внешнее сходство, особенно в словосочетании look like: he looks like his father, а также it looks like rain (ср. русск. похоже на дождь; похоже, что будет дождь). Like в сочетании с глаголом to be может предполагать более глубокое (не только внешнее) сходство. Alike имеет значение 'похожий – одинаковый': they are quite alike (in character). Like и alike различаются по употреблению: like употребляется в тех случаях, когда речь идет о сходстве двух лиц между собой или одного лица с другим (подлежащее может быть выражено существительным или местоимением как в единственном, так и во множественном числе); alike употребляется только в первом из указанных случаев (т. е. всегда с подлежащим – существительным во множественном числе). За прилагательным like обычно следует существительное или местоимение, обозначающее то, с чем происходит сравнение; alike никогда в этой конструкции не употребляется.
